‘Trickster is at one and the same time creator and destroyer, giver and negator, he who dupes and who is always duped himself...He knows neither good nor evil yet is responsible for both. He possesses no values, moral or social...yet through his actions all values come into being’
-Paul Radin from 'Trickster makes this world' by Lewis Hyde
My ceramic work is about conveying a narrative, influenced by the array of mythology from around the world that come in such a colourful array, but in the similarities connects every culture in entertaining and guiding us. My figures are especially influenced by Trickster, a character quite unique in their worlds and their purpose. The architecture type must be craved as they turn up in almost every country’s culture. Tricksters drive and curiosity despite his human fragility changes the world they come from, although neither good or evil through his actions everything evolves. I wanted to convey the idea of 'disruptive creativity' on the hands and the potential it represents. Suggesting rather than dictating narrative has been important in my work, the space for the viewer to connect and interpret what the trickster brings for them. I believe his existence is just as important now, his flexibility, relentless curiosity and ever changing actions reflect our society and the preparation of such a unpredictable future.
